About GLSEN Pittsburgh
GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network envisions a world where all students can attend school in a safe and affirming environment, free of harassment and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity/expression.
GLSEN Pittsburgh leads the way in the movement to create safe school environments for LGBT students by providing effective programming aimed at changing the school environment with the help of educators, administrators, students, and parents. We work at various levels throughout the school community in order to:
- create comprehensive and inclusive anti-bullying/non-discrimination policies
- enable educators to teach about LGBT issues, combat bullying in their classrooms and support LGBT students
- support Gay-Straight Alliances both in schools and in the community
- provide LGBT-inclusive curriculum, Day of Action programming, and community resources for schools
We serve K-12 schools throughout the 11 counties of southwest Pennsylvania creating a network of supported, educated, and knowledgeable individuals within the school community.
Programs that support our mission:
Professional Development Workshops - equipping educators to address anti-LGBT behavior in their classrooms, incorporate LGBT issues into their curriculum, and prepare them to support LGBT students.
Southwest PA GSA Initiative - equipping student leaders and advisors on how to create and maintain a strong and productive GSA in their school through training, support and networking opportunities.
Peer Advocates for Safe Schools - empowering student leaders on how to create safe school environments across our service area through a community organizing model.
Advocates for Change in the Education System - training & empower parents on the rights of their students; creating advocates to work with administration to create policies & procedures that will protect LGBT students.
