Model Laws & Policies
Let’s face it – bullying and harassment based on sexual orientation and gender identity/expression are way too common in our schools. And this isn’t just in this school or that state – this is a nationwide problem. And we want to be part of the solution.
The What
One of many ways we here at GLSEN are working to make things better for LGBT young people is through the passage of safe schools laws and policies. These laws are very clear – once passed, bullying and harassment based on a student’s sexual orientation or gender identity/expression is not tolerated. Period.
The How
GLSEN has created these model policies based on our best thinking about how to make schools safer. We looked at existing policies and our own research to assess what’s needed. Now they are here for you to use. You can take these policies and adapt them to your community. Bring them to your school, your school board or your state legislature and ask that they update their laws to reflect these policies.
The Who
If you’re interested in making your school a safe space, we’re here to help. GLSEN has developed and made available a range of tools (see “Resource Downloads” to your right) for people and groups working at any level trying to implement a safe schools campaign.
These tools have all the information you need to launch and sustain an effective campaign, including:
- Sample legislation that might be introduced at the state level
- The components that make up a comprehensive safe schools law
- Examples of a school policy designed to prevent bullying
- Reasons why it’s vital to identify and expand the categories of students protected from bullying and harassment.
We can’t say it enough. We want to promote respect and end hurtful bullying, and we’re here to help. If you have any questions or need any help along the way, please contact Brenda Barron. Together, we can get this done.
