National Safe Schools Partnership

Did you know GLSEN is not the only organization pushing for safe schools legislation? Not even close. In fact, GLSEN leads the National Safe Schools Partnership, a coalition of 119 leading national organizations in the fields of education, health, civil rights, youth development and religion that have joined together to support policy recommendations based on concrete research and experience. The Partnership is committed to ensuring that America’s schools are safe for all youth, including those who are LGBT.

Officially, the Partnership supports federal safe schools legislation, such as the Safe Schools Improvement Act, that will comprehensively address the issues of bullying and harassment.

SUCH LEGISLATION MUST:

-   Require comprehensive and effective student conduct policies that prohibit and define bullying and harassment, and that include enumerated categories for protection (including, but not limited to, race, color, national origin, sex, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, and religion);

-   Focus on effective prevention strategies and professional development designed to help school personnel meaningfully address issues associated with bullying and harassment;
Require that states and districts maintain and report data regarding incidents of bullying and harassment in order to inform the development of effective federal, state, and local policies that address these issues.

-   Require that states and districts maintain and report data regarding incidents of bullying and harassment in order to inform the development of effective federal, state, and local policies that address these issues.
